Flow State

Flow is when you get so busy doing something you love that you forget what time it is. It feels like you are in the zone and everything is happening just right. Your hands move on their own, and you feel very happy and peaceful. It is like being a fish swimming in a river where the water carries you along. This is when your heart and your hands are speaking the same language.

When your heart and your hands are speaking the same language. You looked up and three hours had passed. You did not notice. The ego fell away. Action followed action like notes in a jazz solo. That was not distraction. That was the opposite of distraction. That was the most focused you have ever been. Flow is what happens when the distance between you and the work drops to zero. You were not making the thing. You were the thing making itself.

Flow: complete absorption in activity with transformed sense of time. The ego falls away; every action follows inevitably from the previous one. In craft, flow is the moment head and hand merge — the forgotten knowledge replaced by direct connection to the creative force. The individual becomes a conduit. You were not using the tool. The tool was using you. And both of you were being used by something larger.

SOUND: The steady hum of a potter's wheel: the soundtrack of total absorption.

SMELL: Petrichor — rain on dry earth during a deep walk: the scent of being fully present.

TASTE: Cool water after a long time of working hard: refreshment earned by focus.

TOUCH: The smooth surface of a finished carving: flow preserved in the material.

SIGHT: The blur of the world around you when you focus on one spot: everything else disappearing.

BODY: Feeling weightless while running or biking at high speed: the body forgetting itself.
