The Armature

Most big sculptures have a secret skeleton hidden inside them called an armature. It is usually made of wire or wood, and it keeps the soft clay or wax from sliding off into a mess. Think of it like your own skeleton inside your skin; without it, you would be like a jellyfish on land! The armature gives the sculpture a shape to hold onto while the artist adds the details on the outside. Even if you cannot see the wires, they are the most important part because they hold the whole body together.

Even if you cannot see the wires they are the most important part. Every person you admire has an invisible armature. Values. Principles. Habits. You cannot see them but they hold everything together. Remove the armature and the clay collapses. Remove the character and the person collapses. The most important things are always the things you cannot see. The skeleton is never on display. But the skeleton is the reason the body can dance.

The armature: the ontological framework for additive sculpture. Provides friction and support to counteract the fluid nature of plastic media. Establishes proportions and gesture at the primary level, ensuring the final work is grounded in cohesive internal logic. Mimics biological endoskeletal systems: internal rigidity enabling external flexibility. The skeleton is the first decision. Every decision after that is cosmetic.

SOUND: The boing of thick wire being bent into a curve: the sound of invisible structure.

SMELL: The sharp oily scent of pliers and metal wire: infrastructure has a fragrance.

TASTE: The metallic tang of copper wire: tasting the skeleton.

TOUCH: Running your fingers over a bumpy wire frame: feeling what nobody will ever see.

SIGHT: The bones of a statue before the skin is put on: the truth before the beauty.

BODY: Clenching your fist and feeling the hard knuckles underneath: the armature you were born with.
