Dramaturgy

Every story has a secret skeleton or a set of rules that keeps it from falling apart. Dramaturgy is the study of why things happen in a story and how all the pieces fit together. Knowing the why helps us understand the world around us.

Knowing the why helps us understand the world. The skeleton is invisible but it holds everything up. Remove one bone and the body collapses. The dramaturg does not write the story. The dramaturg makes sure the story does not lie to itself. Every life has a dramaturgy. Most people never read their own script.

Dramaturgy: the architectural framework of narrative. Internal logic, historical context, and structural motifs governing a performance's meaning-making process. Connects to semiotics and structuralism: revealing how humans use patterns to derive significance from the chaos of existence. The dramaturg is the architect of meaning. The audience walks through the building without seeing the blueprints.

SOUND: A song with a steady beat that never misses: structure you can hear.

SMELL: A recipe where every spice belongs: the architecture of flavor.

TASTE: A sandwich with layers that taste good together: dramaturgy on bread.

TOUCH: A puzzle piece clicking into place: the feeling of things fitting.

SIGHT: A map that shows you exactly where to go: the skeleton made visible.

BODY: Walking in a straight line, one foot in front of the other: your body following the structure.

Music: Empress by The Arcadian Wild
