Agency & Responsibility (The Driver's License)

Being the driver is a big job because it means you are the one in charge of where the car goes. If you choose to drive toward an ice cream shop and share with your friends, you get the credit for being kind! But if you choose to drive over a flower bed, you have to be the one to say I am sorry and help fix it. Having a driver's license in life means you own your actions. It is not the road's fault if you turn the wheel the wrong way; it is up to you to be a good driver and take care of the people around you.

Having a driver's license in life means you own your actions. You did not choose your parents. You did not choose your country. You did not choose your brain chemistry. But you are still the one holding the wheel. And that is enough. Because responsibility is not about deserving blame. Responsibility is about having the power to respond. Response-ability. The ability to respond. You cannot control the weather. But you can choose how you drive in it. You cannot control the road. But you can choose your speed. You cannot control other drivers. But you can choose your lane. The question was never whether the road is fair. The road is not fair. The question is whether you will drive with integrity anyway. And that question — that one — is entirely yours.

Agency grounds moral responsibility: being the source of one's actions warrants reactive attitudes like gratitude or resentment. Responsibility is not about deserving blame. It is response-ability — the ability to respond. And that is entirely yours.

SOUND: A judge's gavel hitting the wood: the sound of ownership meeting consequence.

SMELL: A clean freshly washed car: the scent of a driver who takes care of what they were given.

TASTE: The bitterness of a mistake or the sweetness of a job well done: the tongue tasting the result of a choice.

TOUCH: A firm honest handshake: the hand sealing a promise the body intends to keep.

SIGHT: A stop sign that tells you to think before you move: the visual of a choice point.

BODY: Standing up straight and feeling heavy with a serious decision: the body carrying the weight of agency.

Music: Head Like a Hole by Nine Inch Nails
