Non-Duality

Think of a big wave in the middle of the ocean that thinks it is a separate thing from the water. The wave might be scared of ending when it hits the beach and disappears. But the truth is, the wave was always just the ocean moving in a special way for a moment. When the wave breaks, it does not die; it just goes back to being the big deep ocean. You are not just a person in the world; you are the world acting like a person for a little while.

You are the world acting like a person for a little while. The wave does not die. The wave was never born. The wave was always the ocean pretending to have a shape. You are not a noun. You are a verb. You are the universe waving. The fear of death is the wave's fear of the ocean. But the wave IS the ocean. It was the ocean before it rose. It will be the ocean after it falls. The shape is temporary. The water is permanent. You are not the shape. You are the water. And water does not end. Water changes form. Ice. Steam. Rain. River. Cloud. Wave. You.

Advaita Vedanta: the individual self (atman) is identical with the universal self (brahman). The wave-ocean metaphor dissolves the subject-object distinction. You are not a noun. You are a verb. You are the universe waving. The shape is temporary. The water is permanent.

SOUND: The roar of the ocean where you cannot tell where one wave stops: sound without borders.

SMELL: Salt air everywhere at once: the scent of something that refuses to be separate.

TASTE: A grain of salt dissolving in a giant pot of soup: identity becoming everything.

TOUCH: Stepping into a warm bath until you cannot feel the line between skin and water: the boundary disappearing.

SIGHT: A mirror reflecting another mirror going on forever: self looking at self with no end.

BODY: The feeling of drifting just before you wake up: the body between form and formlessness.
