Proprioceptive Awareness

Even with your eyes closed, you know exactly where your hands and feet are! This is a special sense your body has to keep track of itself. When you are alone and quiet, you can feel your body from the inside out. It is like your skin is a house, and you are the person living inside of it. This helps you feel safe and at home in your own skin no matter where you go.

You are the person living inside your skin. You have a sixth sense and it is not seeing ghosts. It is knowing where your body is without looking. Close your eyes. Touch your nose. You did not miss. You did not miss because your body has a map of itself that does not need light to read. This map is older than language. Older than thought. It is the first relationship you ever had — the relationship between your mind and your body. Before you had a friend. Before you had a name. You had a body that knew where it was. And it is still there. Right now. Anchoring you. Holding you in place. Not because it has to. Because it wants to. Your body is not your vehicle. Your body is your oldest friend.

Proprioception as the 'sixth sense' of self-navigation — mechanosensory neurons in muscles, tendons, and joints providing the body schema. Your body is not your vehicle. Your body is your oldest friend.

SOUND: The whoosh of air in your ears when you yawn: the body speaking to itself when no one else is listening.

SMELL: The salty scent of your own skin: the smell of the house you have lived in your entire life.

TASTE: The neutral wet feeling of your mouth: the taste of the default state before anything else arrives.

TOUCH: The texture of your own hair: the self touching the self and recognizing itself.

SIGHT: The patterns on your fingerprints: a signature the universe gave you before you had a name.

BODY: Balancing on one foot and feeling your ankle wiggle to keep you up: the body solving a math problem in real time without telling you the answer.
