Mindfulness: Awakened Attention

Most people walk through life like sleepwalkers. They eat without tasting. They look without seeing. They hear without listening. Mindfulness is the alarm clock that wakes you up while you are still alive. It is not about sitting on a pillow. It is about noticing. Noticing the blue of the sky. Noticing the weight of your feet. Noticing that you are angry before the anger takes over. Noticing that you are noticing. That second noticing — the noticing of the noticing — is the beginning of awakening.

The superpower of noticing that you are noticing. Awareness is not the same as thinking. Thinking is content. Awareness is the screen the content plays on. You can think without being aware that you are thinking — that is called being lost in thought. Or you can be aware that you are thinking — that is called mindfulness. The difference is everything. Lost in thought, the anger IS you. Mindful of thought, the anger is something you are experiencing. Same anger. Different relationship. And the relationship changes everything. This is why every awakening tradition begins here. Not with enlightenment. Not with oneness. With attention. Can you notice what is happening right now? Can you notice that you are the one noticing? That double-awareness — the awareness of awareness — is what the Buddhists call sati, what the Hindus call sakshi, what the Christians call the inner witness. It is the oldest technology of awakening on the planet. And it requires no equipment, no teacher, no special conditions. Just this moment. And the willingness to actually show up for it.

Mindfulness: awareness of awareness. Sati (Buddhism), sakshi (Hinduism), the inner witness (Christianity) — the oldest technology of awakening, requiring no equipment. Lost in thought: anger IS you. Mindful of thought: anger is something you are experiencing. Same anger. Different relationship.

SOUND: A bell struck once and allowed to fade completely: the sound of a single moment given full permission to exist.

SMELL: The scent of whatever is in the room right now — noticed for the first time today: the nose proving that reality was always richer than your attention allowed.

TASTE: The first sip of morning coffee tasted as if you have never tasted coffee before: the tongue meeting an old friend as a stranger.

TOUCH: The texture of your own clothing against your arm — noticed for the first time in hours: the skin demonstrating how much you miss when you are not paying attention.

SIGHT: The exact color of the light in this room right now: the eyes seeing what was always visible but never witnessed.

BODY: The feeling of gravity holding you in this chair at this exact moment: the body anchoring awareness in the only moment that exists.
