The Fibonacci Sequence

The Fibonacci sequence is a list of numbers: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and so on. You get the next number by adding the two before it. Nature uses these numbers to decide how many petals a flower should have or how a pinecone should grow. It is like nature's way of counting! This sequence shows us that everything grows in a very smart organized way. We are all growing along with this natural rhythm.

Nature's way of counting — every number is the sum of the two before it. 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144... The rule is absurdly simple: add the last two numbers to get the next one. A child can do it. And yet this simple rule generates the growth pattern of almost everything alive. Lilies have 3 petals. Buttercups have 5. Delphiniums have 8. Marigolds have 13. Daisies have 21 or 34 or 55 or 89. Almost never a non-Fibonacci number. Pinecones spiral in Fibonacci numbers. Pineapples spiral in Fibonacci numbers. Sunflower seeds spiral in Fibonacci numbers. The branching of trees follows Fibonacci numbers. The breeding pattern of rabbits follows Fibonacci numbers. Why? Because Fibonacci growth is the most efficient growth. It is how you pack the most seeds in the least space. How you branch the most limbs with the least overlap. How you grow the fastest with the least waste. The sequence is not a design choice. The sequence is a survival strategy. And every living thing that uses it outcompetes the ones that do not. You did not learn Fibonacci in school first. You learned it in the womb. Your body has been counting in Fibonacci since before your brain existed.
