Fractals (The Infinite Mirror)

A fractal is a shape that looks the same no matter how much you zoom in. If you look at a big branch on a tree, it looks like a whole tree, and the tiny twigs on that branch look like little trees too. This shows us that the big and the small are actually doing the same thing. It means that you are a small version of the whole universe! Everything is a mirror of everything else.

The answer should be simple. But it is not. Because the closer you look, the more detail you find. The coastline gets longer and longer as your ruler gets smaller and smaller. The coast does not have a fixed length. The coast is a fractal. And so is almost everything in nature. Your lungs branch like trees. Your blood vessels branch like rivers. Rivers branch like lightning. Lightning branches like neurons. Neurons branch like tree roots. The pattern is the same. At every scale. This is not coincidence. This is the universe using one algorithm — branch, repeat, branch, repeat — to solve every distribution problem it has. Need to deliver oxygen to cells? Branch. Need to drain water from a continent? Branch. Need to transmit electrical signals? Branch. The solution is always the same shape. Because the problem is always the same problem: how do you reach everything from one starting point? The answer is a fractal. You are a fractal. A small version of a pattern that is running at every scale from the cellular to the cosmic. As above, so below. The mystics said it first. SIGHT: Lightning striking or a river viewed from space: the sight of the same branching pattern at scales separated by orders of magnitude.

BODY: Your lungs expanding — your airways are fractals: the body breathing through a geometry that mirrors the tree it shares the air with.
