The Treasure Hard to Attain

In many stories, a dragon guards a pile of gold in a dark cave. The dragon represents our fears, and the gold represents the wisdom we can only get by facing those fears. You cannot find this treasure in the sunshine or on the playground; you have to go deep underground to get it. This treasure might be learning how to be truly kind, or finding a talent you did not know you had. Once you fight your dragon and get the gold, you realize the gold was inside you all along. You just needed the cave to help you see it shine.

There is a golden key hidden in your heart. Feel it turn. It unlocks a door you did not know was there. The dragon was never guarding the gold from you. The dragon was guarding it for you.

A classic Jungian motif: the Treasure represents the Self (totality of the psyche), guarded by the Shadow (the dragon). The descent penetrates the unconscious mind. The treasure is not material but gnosis — direct experiential knowledge. Links to Alchemical Gold: purifying base lead of common experience. Value is created through pressure and heat. The cave provides the necessary environment for transmutation.

SOUND: The ting of a metal hammer hitting a crystal.

SMELL: The metallic scent of a new coin: treasure forged in pressure.

TASTE: Honey after a long fast: sweetness earned.

TOUCH: The sharp, cold edge of a diamond.

SIGHT: A gemstone caught in a single beam of light.

BODY: A sudden click or alignment in your posture when you stand tall: the body finding its gold.

Music: Gone, Gone, Gone by Phillip Phillips

Music: Bad Guy by Billie Eilish
