Mathematical Platonism

Imagine if all the people in the world disappeared; would 2+2=4 still be true? Platonism says yes! It suggests numbers and shapes live in a special, invisible world that is more real than objects we touch. A circle you draw on paper is never perfect, but the Idea of a circle is perfect. We follow rules that were there before we arrived. We are like explorers discovering a map that was already drawn by the universe itself.

We do not invent math. We discover it. The circle was perfect before anyone drew one. The map was there before the explorer.

Mathematical Platonism holds that abstract mathematical objects exist independently of language, thought, and practice. Mathematicians discover, not create. Relates to Wigner's Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in natural sciences. If the universe is fundamentally mathematical, existence is the physical instantiation of logically necessary structures.
