Semantics and Signification

A word is like a tiny sticker we put on things so we can talk about them when they are not there. If I say Apple, you see a red, crunchy fruit in your head even if there is not one in the room. But the word Apple is not the fruit itself; it is just a sign. Sometimes we use stickers for things we cannot see, like Love or Bravery. We have to agree on what the stickers mean, or we get confused. When we understand each other, our brain stickers are matching up perfectly.

Words are bridges to the world. But do not forget to walk across them to the real thing. The map is not the territory.

Saussure's Signification: the signifier (sound/image of a word) and the signified (concept) create the sign. This relationship is arbitrary: no natural reason dog represents a canine. Meaning is found not within a word but in how it differs from other words (hot only means something because cold exists). Language is a social contract of differences.

SOUND: Say a word over and over until it sounds like nonsense: the sticker falling off.

SMELL: A crayon: the word Crayon instantly brings up memories of school.

TASTE: The word sour makes your mouth pucker before you even eat the candy.

TOUCH: Close your eyes and touch an object: try to feel it without naming it.

SIGHT: A Stop sign: red color and the word Stop mean the same thing to your brain.

BODY: Move your body to dance versus wiggle: the meaning of the word changes your movement.
