Light & Shadow

You cannot see the stars without the dark night sky, and you cannot see a shadow without the sun. In life, we have good times and sad times, and they both help us grow. The Divine is not just the bright light; the Divine is the strength that helps us through the dark. Like a flashlight in a cave, truth shows us where to walk even when we are scared. Darkness is just a place where the light has not reached yet.

Darkness is just a place where the light has not reached yet. Darkness has no substance. Darkness is not a thing. Darkness is the absence of a thing. You cannot manufacture darkness. You can only remove light. Evil works the same way. Evil is not a force. Evil is the absence of a force. You do not fight darkness by attacking it. You fight darkness by bringing a candle. You do not fight evil by matching it. You fight evil by being good loudly enough that the shadows shrink. The light was always stronger. The light just needs to show up.

Dualism and non-dualism: two primary ways we perceive the divine. While we see good and evil as opposites, high-level philosophies see them as necessary polarity for existence. Jung's shadow work: to find the Self one must integrate darkness. The alchemy of the soul — turning leaden suffering into golden wisdom. Darkness has no substance. You fight it by bringing a candle.

SOUND: The crackle of a fire in a dark forest: light making sound in the darkness.

SMELL: Morning dew and old leaves together: light and dark sharing the same garden.

TASTE: Dark chocolate followed by sweet milk: bitterness making sweetness possible.

TOUCH: A cold ice cube on warm skin: opposites that are actually the same thing at different temperatures.

SIGHT: Your shadow moving under a streetlamp: darkness proving the light exists.

BODY: Balance shifting as you walk from light into a dark room: the body adjusting to truth at a different brightness.
