Repentance (The U-Turn)

Repentance is like realizing you are walking the wrong way on a trail and deciding to turn around. It starts with a feeling in your heart that says I do not want to do that anymore. Instead of just feeling bad, you make a plan to walk toward the light and do good things. It is a very brave thing to do because you have to admit you were lost. But once you turn around, the whole world looks different and you are on the right path again.

Once you turn around the whole world looks different. Repentance is not guilt. Guilt says I am bad. Repentance says I went the wrong way and I am turning around. Guilt paralyzes. Repentance mobilizes. The Hebrew word is teshuva — return. Not punishment. Return. As if you left home and now you are walking back. The path home was always there. You just stopped walking it. Repentance is not the end of a story. Repentance is the plot twist that makes the ending good. Every great redemption arc in every story ever told begins with one character deciding to turn around.

Teshuva (return) or metanoia (change of mind): cognitive realignment. Active rejection of a previous mode of being in favor of new alignment with truth. Guilt paralyzes. Repentance mobilizes. Repentance is not the end of a story. Repentance is the plot twist that makes the ending good.

SOUND: Footsteps changing direction on gravel: the sound of a decision the whole earth can hear.

SMELL: Eucalyptus or peppermint: clarity entering through the sinuses.

TASTE: Bitter herbs followed by sweet fruit: the taste of consequence followed by grace.

TOUCH: Washing your hands with cool clean soap: renewal you can feel with your fingers.

SIGHT: A compass needle spinning to find north: direction after confusion.

BODY: Shifting weight from heels to toes: the body pivoting before the journey resumes.

Music: Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) by Chris Tomlin
