Proportion & Scale

Proportion is about how big one part is compared to another part, like how your head fits on your shoulders. Scale is about how big the whole thing is compared to you. A giant statue of a kitten makes the kitten look like a monster, and a tiny statue of a mountain makes the mountain look like a toy. When a sculptor gets the proportion right, the statue looks real, even if it is made of green clay. It helps us understand where we fit in the big wide world.

The sculptor made Lincoln nineteen feet tall so that democracy would feel bigger than any one person. Now hold a tiny figurine in your palm. You feel powerful. Scale is not about size. Scale is about relationship. The sculptor decides whether you look up or look down — and that decision changes who you think you are.

Proportion: the mathematical ratio between constituent parts of a form. Historically utilizing the Golden Ratio (1.618) to create works resonating with biological patterns in nature. Scale is relational, defining the work's impact on its environment and the viewer's body. Manipulating scale engages proprioception directly — heroic scale inspires awe, miniature scale invites intimacy. The sculptor does not change the size of the object. The sculptor changes the size of the viewer.

SOUND: The echo of your voice in a giant room versus a small closet: scale you can hear.

SMELL: The concentrated scent of a tiny flower: small things with enormous presence.

TASTE: A tiny drop of super sour lemon juice: proportion between size and power.

TOUCH: Trying to wrap your arms around a giant tree: your body measuring the world.

SIGHT: A statue so tall you cannot see the top: scale rewriting your sense of self.

BODY: Feeling very small next to a skyscraper: your proprioception recalibrating.
