Sleep Hygiene

Sleep hygiene is just a fancy way of saying good sleep habits. Just like you brush your teeth to keep them healthy, you do certain things to keep your sleep healthy. This means keeping your room cool and dark, staying away from bright screens at night, and going to bed at the same time every day. When you have a good routine, your brain knows exactly when it is time to switch off. It makes falling asleep easy and waking up feel great.

Good sleep habits are like brushing your teeth for your brain. You would not eat candy all day and then wonder why your teeth hurt. But you stare at a blue light screen until midnight and then wonder why you cannot sleep. The screen is the candy. The insomnia is the cavity. Sleep hygiene is not complicated. Cool room. Dark room. Same time every night. No screens in the last hour. That is it. Four rules. But those four rules are the difference between a brain that heals and a brain that accumulates damage. You do not need a sleep app. You need a routine. And the routine needs to be boring. Because boring is the lullaby the nervous system has been waiting for.

Sleep hygiene: thermal regulation (body drops ~2-3°F to initiate sleep), light hygiene (minimizing 450-480nm blue light), and stimulus control. You do not need a sleep app. You need a routine. Boring is the lullaby the nervous system has been waiting for.

SOUND: The shhh of a quiet peaceful room: silence as an active ingredient.

SMELL: Freshly washed cotton sheets: the scent of a room that has been prepared for you.

TASTE: The absence of sugar or caffeine in the evening: the taste of nothing as medicine.

TOUCH: A cool pillowcase against your cheek: the skin reading the temperature and approving.

SIGHT: A completely dark room with no blinking lights: the eyes confirming that the world has been switched off.

BODY: Your body relaxing into a familiar posture: the muscles recognizing the nightly cue.
