Duality

Light and shadow always go together, just like day and night. You cannot see how bright a flashlight is in the middle of a sunny day; you need the dark to see the light! In the same way, we understand good because we know what bad feels like. Having these two sides helps us grow and learn how to choose the light every time. It is like having two colors to paint a picture instead of just one. The contrast makes the world more interesting and helps us find our way.

You cannot see how bright a flashlight is in the middle of a sunny day — you need the dark. Take away all the shadows and you do not get paradise. You get blindness. Take away all the cold and you do not get comfort. You get a world where warmth has no name. Good without evil is not a better story. Good without evil is no story at all. The hero needs the dragon. The light needs the dark. Not to win. To exist. Every coin has two sides. If you melt one off you do not have a better coin. You have no coin.

Duality: the universe composed of complementary opposites. In ethics, the good is a directional vector meaningful only when evil is a possible alternative. The entropy of the system — without potential for disorder, order has zero informativeness, indistinguishable from static vacuum. The hero needs the dragon. Not to win. To exist. If you melt one side off the coin you do not have a better coin. You have no coin.

SOUND: A loud cymbal crash followed by total silence: two opposites defining each other.

SMELL: Sweet flowers near a muddy swamp: beauty and decay sharing the same address.

TASTE: Sweet and salty together: two opposites making something better than either alone.

TOUCH: A warm hand on a cold windowpane: feeling the boundary between two worlds.

SIGHT: A bright white star in a black sky: light that only exists because darkness agreed to hold it.

BODY: Tension and then total release of a muscle: the body understanding contrast.

Music: The Old Rugged Cross by Traditional Hymn
