Ego vs. Essence
Sometimes we wear masks to fit in, like acting extra tough or extra silly so people like us. This mask is called the Ego, and it cares a lot about what others think. But underneath the mask is your Essence, which is the real you that does not need to show off. When you are alone, you can take the mask off and just breathe. Your Essence is like a quiet light that never goes out, even when the world is loud.
Your Essence is a quiet light that never goes out even when the world is loud. The ego is the costume. The essence is the actor. The ego is the resume. The essence is the person. The ego is the Instagram post. The essence is the person sitting on the toilet scrolling through Instagram. One is performed. One simply is. You do not need to kill the ego. The ego is useful. It gets you through job interviews and first dates and parent-teacher conferences. But you need to know when you are wearing the costume and when the costume is wearing you. The test is simple: if you cannot be alone in a quiet room for ten minutes without reaching for your phone, the costume is wearing you.
The ego-essence duality: the socialized protective self vs. unconditioned awareness. The ego seeks validation. The essence seeks connection. If you cannot be alone in a quiet room for ten minutes without reaching for your phone, the costume is wearing you.
