Substitution: The Great Exchange
Substitution is like having a substitute teacher take the place of your regular teacher for a day. In math, if we find out that x is actually the number 5, we can take x out and put 5 in its place. This helps us check our work and see if the balance of the equation still holds up. By swapping symbols for numbers, we turn a mystery into a fact.
The feeling of "Aha!" when you realize that two different things are actually telling the same story.
Substitution is the operationalization of Identity. In calculus, u-substitution simplifies complex integrals by mapping them into a more manageable space. It is a fundamental tool for Reductionism — breaking a complex problem into simpler, equal components without losing any information. It proves that the same truth can wear different masks.
