Topology

Topology is "stretchy" geometry. Topologists don't care how big a shape is or how many corners it has; they only care about how many holes it has! If you have a piece of playdough shaped like a donut, you can squeeze and stretch it into a coffee mug without tearing it. Because both have one hole, a topologist says they are the same shape. It's like the "DNA" of a shape that stays the same no matter what.

Imagine your skin is a single, continuous sheet that covers your whole body; no matter how you move, the connectivity of your skin stays the same.

Topology studies properties preserved under continuous deformations (stretching, crumpling, bending) but not tearing or gluing. Two spaces are homeomorphic if one can be continuously mapped to the other. The Euler Characteristic (Ο‡ = V βˆ’ E + F) is a topological invariant for surfaces. In modern physics, Topological Insulators conduct electricity on their surface but insulate in their bulk. In String Theory, the way extra dimensions are curled up (Calabi-Yau manifolds) determines the fundamental constants of our universe.

SOUND: A glissando on a trombone where the note slides smoothly from low to high without breaking.

SMELL: The smell of hot rubber or stretching plastic.

TASTE: A piece of saltwater taffy being pulled and twisted.

TOUCH: Stretching a thick rubber band between your hands.

SIGHT: Watching a lava lamp where the blobs stretch and merge but never "break" the surface.

BODY: Reaching through a hula-hoop; your body is the line passing through the "topology" of the circle.
