Intercession & Sacrifice
Intercession is a big word that just means asking for help from a higher power. Sometimes, people give a little bit of what they have — like food, flowers, or their time — to show they are thankful and to ask the spirits to look after them. It is like giving a gift to a teacher to show you appreciate their help. This helps us remember that we are part of a team and that we should be generous with what we have. When we sacrifice or give up a small treat to help a friend, we are doing the same thing. It connects our hearts to the Big Something through the act of giving.
You give something small. You get something you cannot buy. The coin in the well is not payment. It is proof that you believe the well is listening.
Ritual sacrifice and intercessory prayer are technologies of Reciprocity: Do ut des (I give so that you might give). Psychologically reduces anxiety regarding the Unknown. By offering something of value, the individual enters perceived contract with the divine, creating agency in chaos. Socially strengthens community bonds through shared sacred spaces and shared costs.
