Crossing the Threshold
You are standing at a big gate, and once you step through, you cannot just turn back easily. It is like jumping into the deep end of a swimming pool for the first time. You hear the wind whistling through the doorway, calling you to come inside. You smell the strange, spicy scent of a new land you have never been to. You taste something new and exotic, like a fruit you cannot name. You feel the rough texture of the stone gate under your hands as you push it open. You see a horizon that goes on forever, full of mystery.
The gate only swings one way. Once you step through, you are in the story. There is no going back to who you were before.
Crossing the Threshold marks transition from profane to sacred, conscious to unconscious. The hero leaves societal safety and enters the Special World where ordinary rules no longer apply. Often involves Threshold Guardians who test resolve. Passing signifies commitment to the quest and readiness for trials ahead.
