Altruism

Altruism is when you do something kind for someone else without wanting anything back. Imagine you have the very last cookie, but you see a friend who is really hungry and has not eaten all day. Even though you really want that cookie, you give it to them because making sure they are okay is more important than your own snack. This makes the world a better place because it shows we are all looking out for each other. When we help others, it makes a special kind of heart-happiness that everyone can feel. It is like planting a seed of love that grows into a big tree for everyone to sit under.

The candle does not lose its flame by lighting another. You do not lose yourself by giving. You grow. That is the secret the selfish never learn.

In evolutionary biology and game theory, altruism is analyzed through Kin Selection and Reciprocal Altruism. Hamilton's Rule (rb>c): self-sacrifice is a sophisticated mechanism for survival of the collective information system. Phenomenologically, altruism dissolves the boundary between self and other, moving from closed ego to open-system contributor.
