Psychological Alchemy

Sometimes we have feelings or thoughts that make us feel messy inside, like anger or sadness. Psychological alchemy is like using a little candle to look into the dark corners of our mind to see what is there. Instead of hiding the mess, we let the light of our attention burn away the parts that are not true, like being mean to ourselves. When we face our shadows, the fire of our honesty reveals a version of us that is much more peaceful. It is like turning lead into gold by just being brave enough to look at it.

Turning lead into gold by just being brave enough to look at it. The mess inside you is not a problem. It is raw material. The anger is lead. The attention is fire. The peace is gold. You already have everything you need. You just have not melted it yet.

The alchemical stage of calcinatio involves symbolic burning of the ego's attachments. Subjecting the psyche to the fire of self-observation refines prima materia of raw emotion into conscious awareness. Connects Jungian psychology to ancient Hermetic traditions viewing human experience as a series of transmutations. The philosopher's stone was never a rock. It was attention.

SOUND: The hush of a quiet room: the sound of looking inward.

SMELL: Calming lavender or sandalwood: the scent of safe introspection.

TASTE: Dark chocolate: bitter then sweet, like the truth.

TOUCH: Hugging yourself or a soft pillow: holding what hurts.

SIGHT: Your own reflection in a mirror: the bravest thing to face.

BODY: Noticing where you hold tension in your jaw or shoulders: your body storing unburned fuel.

Music: You and Your Heart by Jack Johnson
