The Sacrifice of the Shell

For a seed to grow, its hard outer shell has to crack and fall away. This might seem scary, but it is the only way for the plant inside to get out. The shell protected the seed when it was a baby, but now it has to let go to become a tree. This teaches us that sometimes we have to let go of old habits or old fears so we can grow into the amazing people we are meant to be.

Sometimes we have to let go of what protected us so we can grow into what we are meant to be. The shell is not the enemy. The shell did its job. But staying inside it is. Thank it and break it.

This is the regularization of state. To avoid the interior singularity of staying closed, the seed must transition into a full-rank, open state. The shell represents delta regularization — a necessary boundary that must eventually be shed for the entropy of life to expand. Relates to phenomenology and transcending the self. Growth requires the courage to destroy your own armor.

SOUND: The crisp crack of an eggshell or a dry leaf: the sound of becoming.

SMELL: The scent of a dry autumn day: the season of letting go.

TASTE: The soft inside of bread with a hard crust: what was hidden.

TOUCH: Peeling a sticker off a smooth surface: release.

SIGHT: A butterfly leaving its cocoon behind: the shell was never the destination.

BODY: The relief when you take off heavy shoes: your body knowing what it means to shed.

Music: Songbird by Fleetwood Mac
