The Greenhouse Effect

The Greenhouse Effect is like the Earth wearing a cozy sweater made of invisible gases. When the sun warms the Earth, the ground tries to send some of that heat back into space. Gases like carbon dioxide and water vapor catch some of that heat and keep it near the surface. This is actually a good thing because it keeps us warm enough to live! However, if the sweater gets too thick, the planet starts to get a fever, which changes the weather everywhere.

We are all living inside a delicate, shared home that requires balance. The sweater keeps us alive. But we are the ones knitting it thicker. The thermostat is in our hands.

The Greenhouse Effect is the process by which atmospheric radiation warms a planet's surface above what it would be without atmosphere. A fundamental aspect of planetary science. Radiative forcing from COβ‚‚, CHβ‚„, and Hβ‚‚O governs the thermal balance. Connects to biology and political science as the basis for understanding global climate shifts and their consequences.

SOUND: The silence of a humid, heavy afternoon where no birds sing.

SMELL: The green smell of a warm, damp indoor greenhouse.

TASTE: Soup that stays hot because of a lid: trapped warmth.

TOUCH: Stepping out of air conditioning into a wall of heat.

SIGHT: The hazy, shimmering horizon on a very warm day.

BODY: Slight swelling in your fingers during heat: your body expanding with the planet.
