Retributive Justice

If someone takes your pencil on purpose, retributive justice says they have to give it back or lose one of theirs. It is the idea that for every bad thing, there must be a matching consequence to make it even. It is like a math problem where both sides of the equals sign have to be the same. While it can be tough, it is meant to show that rules have power and must be followed.

The equation must balance. What was taken must be returned. What was broken must cost something. Not cruelty. Math. The universe demands the equals sign.

Retributive justice seeks 1:1 fidelity between offense and penalty. Operates on a recognition core where balance is restored through subtraction. In physics, relates to Conservation of Energy: every debt must be paid to maintain equilibrium. In legal history, represented by Lex Talionis. Contrasts with restorative approaches.
