The Social Contract

The social contract is an invisible promise we all make to each other. It is like saying I will not take your lunch if you do not take mine. We follow rules and are nice so that everyone can live in peace. We give up a little bit of being wild so we can be safe. It is the We deciding that we are better together than we are alone.

Nobody signed a paper. But everybody follows the rules. The contract is invisible. The proof is that we are all still here, together.

The social contract reduces social entropy through collective agreement. Individuals form connected components more resilient than the sum of parts. Basis of political science from Hobbes to Rousseau. Mirrors symbiosis in ecology: different species providing mutual benefits to ensure survival of the larger ecosystem.

SOUND: The low hum of a busy, peaceful city.

SMELL: A library or shared public space: community you can smell.

TASTE: A shared loaf of bread.

TOUCH: A pinky promise: the smallest gesture holding the biggest weight.

SIGHT: A stop sign that everyone actually stops for.
