Adaptation

Adaptation is like having a "superpower" for where you live. A polar bear has a white coat to hide in the snow; a camel has a hump to store food for the desert. It is life's way of "dressing up" for the party it was invited to.

You are perfectly designed for right now. Your body and mind are a toolkit built over eons to help you handle exactly what you are facing today.

Adaptation is the process of Teleonomy, where organisms appear "designed" for a purpose. It involves the fixation of beneficial alleles through selective pressure. This is fundamental to Biomimicry, where human engineering copies biological adaptations (e.g., Velcro from burrs), connecting biology to Functional Design and Engineering.

SOUND: The silent flight of an owl. Its feathers are adapted to make no noise so it can sneak up on mice.

SMELL: The "wet dog" smell. It's actually oils on the skin adapted to keep the dog's skin dry and warm.

TASTE: The bitter taste of some mushrooms. They adapted that taste so you won't eat them.

TOUCH: The prick of a cactus spine. It's a "leaf" adapted to protect water in a dry place.

SIGHT: The huge eyes of a cat. They are adapted to see in the dark where we are blind.

BODY: The "sea legs" you get on a boat. Your body is trying to adapt its balance to a moving world.
