The Eternal Now

Here is the strangest truth about time: there is only now. You have never experienced yesterday because when it was happening, it was now. You will never experience tomorrow because when it arrives, it will be now. The past is a memory happening now. The future is an imagination happening now. Now is not a moment in time. Now is the only thing that exists. Enlightenment is not something you achieve in the future. Enlightenment is what is available in this moment if you stop looking for it somewhere else.

You have never lived a single second that was not right now. Augustine said: What then is time? If no one asks me, I know. If I wish to explain it to one who asks, I do not know. Time is the deepest mystery dressed in the most familiar clothes. We say the past happened. But you cannot touch the past. You can only remember it — and the remembering happens now. We say the future will come. But you cannot touch the future. You can only imagine it — and the imagining happens now. Now is not a point on a timeline. Now is the screen on which the timeline is projected. Eckhart Tolle called it the power of now. The Zen masters call it the eternal present. The physicists call it the block universe — where all moments exist simultaneously and the sensation of time passing is a feature of consciousness, not of reality. Awakening is not an event that will happen to you someday. Awakening is the recognition that this moment — this exact one — contains everything that has ever been and everything that will ever be. You are not waiting for enlightenment. You are standing in it. You have always been standing in it. The only thing that ever obscured it was the belief that it was somewhere else.

The Eternal Now: Augustine, Tolle, the block universe. Now is not a point on a timeline — now is the screen on which the timeline is projected. Awakening is not an event that will happen to you someday. You are standing in it. You have always been standing in it.

SOUND: The sound happening right now — whatever it is — heard as the only sound that has ever existed: the ears tuning to the eternal frequency.

SMELL: The air in this room right now: the scent of the present moment unfiltered by memory or expectation.

TASTE: The taste already in your mouth before you put anything in it: the flavor of existence before addition.

TOUCH: Whatever your hands are touching right now: the present arriving through your fingertips with no delay.

SIGHT: The light in this room at this exact second: photons that left a source and arrived here now and will never exist in exactly this configuration again.

BODY: The breath you are taking at this exact moment: the body's proof that now is not a concept — now is the only address where life is delivered.
