Gibbs Free Energy
Gibbs is the "Spending Money" of energy. It's the energy that is actually free to go do something cool, like growing a flower or moving your arm. If a reaction has enough "spending money," it happens all by itself!
Knowing when a moment is "ripe" — when everything is lined up for something to happen naturally without being forced.
Gibbs Free Energy (ΔG = ΔH − TΔS) determines chemical spontaneity. If ΔG is negative, the process is exergonic (it happens "voluntarily"). This concept is the gateway to understanding biological life as a series of coupled reactions. It connects to "Vitalism" — the spark that allows systems to act upon their environment.
SOUND: The "fizz" of an Alka-Seltzer in water — a spontaneous reaction.
SMELL: The scent of a ripening banana — chemicals changing on their own.
TASTE: The sour kick of a lemon — acid reacting with your taste buds.
TOUCH: Hand-warmers — chemicals releasing "useful" heat when you click them.
SIGHT: A rusty nail — nature "deciding" to turn iron into rust over time.
BODY: That feeling of "I'm ready to go!" before a race.
Music: Enter Sandman by Metallica
