The Flow State (The Zone)
Have you ever been so busy drawing or playing a game that you forgot what time it was? That is called Flow. It is when the Thinker stops talking because you are so focused on what you are doing. The Observer and the Thinker become one team. It feels like you are dancing through your work without even trying. It is one of the happiest feelings a human can have.
One of the happiest feelings a human can have. In flow, the narrator shuts up. The committee leaves the room. The editor puts down the red pen. And for a few minutes — sometimes hours — you are not thinking about doing the thing. You are just doing the thing. The guitar plays itself. The sentence writes itself. The ball finds the hoop without permission from the conscious mind. This is what monks spend decades meditating to achieve. And you stumbled into it playing a video game. Flow is proof that your best self lives on the other side of your thoughts. Not before them. Not through them. On the other side of them. Silence the thinker. Become the doing. And the doing will show you who you actually are.
Flow: transient hypofrontality — temporary deactivation of the self-reflective prefrontal cortex allowing high-speed processing without ego clutter. Your best self lives on the other side of your thoughts. Silence the thinker. Become the doing.
SOUND: Fast rhythmic drumming that makes you want to move: the sound of the self disappearing into the action.
SMELL: New art supplies: the scent of possibility before the ego shows up to judge.
TASTE: An orange slice that gives you a burst of energy: fuel that bypasses thought and goes straight to motion.
TOUCH: A basketball or controller in your hands: the tool becoming part of the hand.
SIGHT: Colors swirling in a kaleidoscope: vision without analysis.
BODY: Running until you feel like you are flying: the body erasing the narrator with motion.
Music: True Love Waits by Radiohead
