The thing watching the thing thinking
Imagine you are sitting in a movie theater. Your thoughts and feelings are the movie playing on the big screen, but you are the person sitting in the chair watching it. Even if the movie is scary or sad, the person in the chair is actually safe and quiet. You are not the movie; you are the one watching the movie. This helps you feel calm because you know that thoughts come and go like pictures on a screen. When you realize this, you can choose which movies to pay attention to.
The Thinker is the part of your brain that uses words to tell stories about who you are. It likes to talk about what you did yesterday or what you are worried about for tomorrow. Sometimes it tells you that you are the best, and sometimes it says you are not good enough. It is like a busy radio station that never stops playing music and talking. But remember, you are the person listening to the radio, not the radio itself. You can turn the volume down whenever you want.
Imagine a giant ocean with millions of waves on the surface. Each wave thinks it is special and separate from the other waves. But if you look deeper, every single wave is just the ocean moving around. You are like a wave, but you are also the whole ocean at the same time. There is no real line where you end and the rest of the world begins. Everything is connected in one big beautiful dance.
Mindfulness is like being a scientist who is studying their own brain. When you feel a big feeling like anger or sadness, you do not have to be angry. Instead, you say hmm I notice that I am feeling angry right now. By naming the feeling, you put a little bit of space between you and the emotion. This gives you the power to stay calm and make good choices. It is like watching a storm from inside a sturdy house.
Metacognition is like having a super-brain that watches your regular brain work. It is when you realize I am having a hard time learning this because I am distracted. You are not just doing the work; you are checking to see how you are doing the work. It is like a coach standing on the sidelines of a game. The coach is not running on the field, but they see everything clearly.
Your brain is like a piece of soft clay that can be reshaped. Every time you practice being the Observer, you are carving a new path in that clay. If you practice being calm, your brain actually gets better at being calm. You are the artist, and your thoughts are the tools you use to shape your mind. You are not stuck with the brain you have; you can grow a happier one!
Think of your mind like the big blue sky. The sky is always there, and it is always huge and quiet. Your thoughts and feelings are like clouds that float by. Some clouds are white and fluffy, and some are dark and rainy. But no matter how many clouds there are, they cannot hurt the sky. You are the sky, not the clouds. The clouds just pass through you.
Have you ever been so busy drawing or playing a game that you forgot what time it was? That is called Flow. It is when the Thinker stops talking because you are so focused on what you are doing. The Observer and the Thinker become one team. It feels like you are dancing through your work without even trying. It is one of the happiest feelings a human can have.
Even though we have our own bodies, our Observers are all looking at the same world. When you feel sad for a friend, that is your awareness touching their awareness. It is like we are all different lights plugged into the same giant battery. We are never truly alone because the Observer inside me is just like the Observer inside you. We are all part of the same big family of life.
The Thinker loves to travel in time. It goes to the past to feel sad or to the future to feel worried. But the Observer can only stay in the Now. Right now is the only time that actually exists. If you keep your awareness on this very second, you will find that most of your problems disappear. The Now is a magic place where you are always okay.
