The Golden Rule (Reciprocity)

The Mirror for Your Heart

Imagine you are playing a game with a friend. If you want them to be nice and share, you have to be nice and share first. This is the Golden Rule, and it is like a mirror for your heart. When you do something, ask yourself if you would like it if someone did that same thing to you. By being kind, you teach the world how to be kind back to you. It is the simplest way to make sure the world stays a happy place for everyone.

Universal Human Rights

The Shield Every Person Is Born With

Every single person in the world is born with a special shield of rights that no one should ever break. You have the right to be safe, to speak, and to be treated fairly just because you are human. It does not matter where you live or what you look like; the rules are the same for everyone. When we protect these rights, we are saying that every life is valuable. It is like a big promise the world makes to every new baby that joins us.

Empathy and Compassion

The Invisible String

Empathy is like a superpower that lets you feel what someone else is feeling in your own heart. If a friend is sad because they fell down, you feel a little of that sadness too, which makes you want to help. Compassion is the action you take: giving a hug or helping them up. It is the invisible string that ties all people together so we are never truly alone. When we use our empathy, we understand the other half of the story.

Integrity and Honesty

The Diamond That Never Cracks

Integrity means being the same good person on the inside that you show to the world on the outside. It is like being a diamond: no matter which way you turn it, it is still strong and clear. Honesty is telling the truth even when it is hard or when no one is watching. When you are honest, people know they can trust you, which is like building a strong bridge between you and them. Being true to yourself is the best way to be true to everyone else.

Justice and Fairness

The Level Scale

Fairness is making sure everyone gets what they need and the rules are the same for everybody. Think about a race: it would not be fair if some kids got to start halfway to the finish line. Justice is making things right when they go wrong, like making sure a bully says sorry and fixes what they broke. It is like a giant scale we try to keep perfectly level. When things are fair, everyone feels safe to try their best.

Consequentialism (The Greater Good)

Ripples in the Pond

Sometimes to do the right thing we have to look at what will happen because of our choices. If you have one toy but five friends want to play, the right thing might be finding a game everyone can play together. This is thinking about the Greater Good: making the most people happy and the fewest people sad. Your choices are like pebbles thrown into a pond; the ripples touch everyone.

Duty and Responsibility (Deontology)

The Law Written on the Heart

Duty is doing what is right simply because it is the rule, even if it does not make you happy right away. Imagine you promised to clean your room before going outside. Even if friends are calling you to play, your duty is to finish your promise first. Responsibility is taking care of the things and people that depend on you. When we all do our part, the whole world runs smoothly like a giant, well-oiled machine.

Virtue Ethics

The Garden Inside Your Soul

Virtue is like a garden you grow inside your soul. Instead of just following a list of dos and don'ts, you try to become a good gardener. You practice being brave, kind, and patient every day. Eventually these things become part of who you are. It is like learning piano: at first it is hard, but after a while the music just flows. A virtuous person does not have to think about being good because they are good.

Social Contract Theory

The Invisible Deal

Imagine you and your friends are starting a secret club. You all sit down and decide on the rules: no hitting, no yelling, everyone gets a turn. By joining the club you sign an invisible paper saying you will follow those rules so everyone can have fun. This is what we do as grown-ups in towns and countries. We agree to follow the laws so we can live together in peace. It is a deal we make with each other.

Moral Relativism vs. Objectivism

Is Right and Wrong Like Math or Like Favorite Colors?

Some people think Right and Wrong are like math: 2+2 is always 4 no matter where you are. That is Objectivism. Other people think Right and Wrong are more like favorite colors: they might change depending on where you live. That is Relativism. It is one of the biggest questions in the world! Is it always wrong to tell a lie, or is it okay if it saves a friend's feelings? Learning both sides helps us understand why people in different parts of the world do things differently.
